The life size sculpture is a commissioned work installed
in the greater Portland area. The work, from conception to
completion, required over a year and weighs approximately 1200
pounds.
During the process, Jan’s sister died of breast cancer. She says,
“For a time after Joy’s death, I was nearly paralyzed with grief.
The white horse as a symbol of victory became especially
meaningful for me then. There were incidents surrounding the
sculpture that profoundly affected me, and it became a
“remembering” of her and the spiritual strength in which she’d
always walked. I thank God for having had such a good sister.”
Help came from her father when he arrived to take care of the
garden and animals. Her neighbors assisted in welding the
armature, and in moving the structure more than once, including
the final transport. “I’m extremely blessed to have supportive
family, friends, teachers, advisors, students and collectors.
They're the best.”
Jan is currently working on a series of smaller sculptures that
will be posted on this site in the future.
